So my Rock Band drums broke a few weeks ago, and while I was waiting for my new set from EA, I asked a buddy if I could try out his real drum kit that he has set up in a room down the hall.

I've never really played the drums before, and had the idea that it might be fun to try to follow along to a Rock Band note chart with a real drum kit.
So I set up the xbox and monitor in front of the drums, and put it on practice mode. Turns out it works pretty well. You have to know when the drums represent cymbals and when the represent toms, but otherwise it's not too hard.

Typically they are set up like this:
Red = snare
Yellow = Hi-Hats
Blue = Ride (or open hats)
Green = Crash

During fills, this changes.
Red = snare
Yellow = high tom
Blue = Low tom
Green = Floor Tom or Crash

So this is me playing along to Limelight by Rush. Neil Peart is a legendary drummer, and I know I sound nothing like him, but this was a lot of fun.

Keep in mind I really have no drumming experience at all. So I think I did pretty good.

  • that was good but the part where u do triplets on the hi hat u should be opening and closing in on the foot pedal beats..... but other that that it was good

  • Thanks for the tip!

    That's one thing you can't learn by playing Rock Band, as there is no Hi-Hat pedal :(

  • excellent for an up and coming drummer

    keep it up, hope you cover more RB songs!

  • Hey, thanks

    I'd like to do more of these vids, problem is I don't have access to a real kit.

    I could start putting some videos up with my IONs though

  • LAMO! i do this all the time...i was wondering if anybody else did it....its kinda weird the first couple times through but after that you dont even really need the screen....great training tool....

  • That's the problem with being a student and living in an apartment. It's hard to get access to a drum kit to practice on. I'd love to see how much I've improved since I made this video, I still play Rock Band 2 almost daily.

  • I think going from color-coded play drums to a real drum set and actually making it sound half way decent is pretty damn impressive.

  • Five stars for not being a faker. Rightous!

  • i thougth it was wel done i was impressed.

  • Yeah, it DOES work..

    But you still have to know the song you are playing, and somewhat how to play the real drums.

    There are small things that are different, and obviously there is a lot more going on than on RockBand..

    You can get a feel of playing the real drums on RockBand. If you play on expert, then you should try a real kit out, and see how you like it.

  • I always wondered if that really worked, i guess it does, and you did a good job for someone who doesnt play drums :D

  • hilarious - not a half bad cover either. you should be proud..

    now how is that for real drumming - beats rock band any day of the week, doesnt it.!

  • don't be silly, its obviously bigger than that!

  • Hit the crashes not the splash,

  • ION videos gogogo.
