The Danish artist Nadia Plesner completed her oil painting Darfurnica in September 2010. Darfurnica, is a modern version of Picasso's Guernica and the same size as the original: 350 x 775 cm. It deals with the disappearing boundaries between the editorial and advertising departments in the media. Entertainment stories about the lives of Hollywood celebrities have become breaking news, and get more attention than much more important stories like the situation in Darfur.
In Darfurnica Plesner mixes the horrible facts about the genocide in Darfur with some of the Hollywood gossip stories which made headlines during the same time period, fx. Paris Hilton going to prison, Britney Spears shaving her head or the first Big Brother star with cancer.
Darfurnica was exhibited for the first time in Copenhagen in January 2011. Following the show, Plesner received a court order from the district court in The Hague. Louis Vuittonhad sued her for copyright infringement and made the court order Plesner to pay 5000 euros for each day she shows Darfurnica on exhibitions or on her website.
Plesner sued LV back to have the court order lifted and the first court hearing will take place on March 30, 2011.
This is the second legal dispute between LV and Plesner. In 2008 LV stopped Plesner's t-shirt campaign Simple Living, which raised money for Darfur/
