Aluva is a 'suburb' of Kochi in the state of Kerala, India. Every year for Sivarathri, the celebration for Lord Shiva in February/March, The Aluva Shiva temple is the famous gathering spot for pilgrims. I found out that Shivarathri is not only a day to pray to lord Shiva but in this complex, people pray for the souls of their departed ancestors. To give homage to their dearly departed, devotees have a particular ritual where they gather some food stuff in a plantain leaf and when they dunk themselves in the Periyar River, they set the food stuff to float down the river.
