Lean On Me - A Jonas Brothers Story - Chapter 1

(This is my first real story, so tell me what you think.)

Joe's POV

You want to know the hardest part about losing someone you love? That feeling that you're never going to see them again. When we lost Frankie it was like this emptiness just swept over all of us. Our house is so quiet and it's been like that for a year now. I can't tell you who it affected the most, but I can tell you that it crushed all of us, especially my mom. She's not nearly as cheerful as she used to be. It hurt the rest of us too. My brothers and I find it hard to write "happy" songs anymore. Everything we write now is pretty depressing.
It was a drunk driver, a year ago, in October. I remember that day like it was yesterday. It had started out just like any other day.

*Flashback*

No one's POV

"Joe, quit it!" Frankie squealed as his brother continued tickling him.
"Never!" Joe said as he made Frankie laugh so hard, tears were coming to his eyes.
"Joseph Adam, release your brother!" Their mother, Denise, yelled sternly from the next room. Joe sighed and let Frankie go. Joe watched as his youngest brother held his right side while he worked his way up the stairs to get away from Joe. Joe chuckled when he heard Frankie stumble at the top of the stairs.
"Joe," Kevin said from the other end of the room. Joe looked over at him with a blank expression. Kevin looked back at him skeptically. "Your little brother's in pain, go apologize. I think you took the tickling a little too far this time." Joe rolled his eyes and turned his gaze to the TV.

With Frankie.

Frankie stumbled down the hallway to his room. He had to hold onto the wall to keep his balance.
"Frankie," Nick called from his room as Frankie passed it. Frankie turned around and walked back to Nick's door. "You alright buddy?" Nick asked when Frankie made it to his doorway.
"Yeah," Frankie said between gasps of air. "I'm fine. Joe was just tickling me."
"Oh," Nick said. "He needs to stop that. He's too rough with you."
"No," Frankie sighed. "He's fine. I just need to have bigger lungs so I can hold more air." Nick laughed.
"Sure Frankie, that's exactly what you need." Nick replied. They both laughed. Nick turned his attention back to the guitar that he was holding in his hands. Frankie turned and continued down the hall to his room.

In the kitchen.

"Joseph," Denise yelled into the living room.
"Yessum?" Joe said as he appeared in the doorway.
"I know it's getting a little late, but would you mind running to the grocery store for me?" Joe nodded and Denise handed him a slip of paper. "It's not too much," she said as Joe turned to head for the garage. "Oh, and take Nick with you. He needs to get out, I don't think he's seen the sun for a few days," Denise smiled. "Well, except through glass."
"Gotcha." Joe replied as he turned, walked through the living room, and bounded up the stairs. He hit the second floor and skipped down the hallway to Nick's room.
"Yo Nicholas," Joe called to his brother as he reached his door. Nick looked up at Joe through his brown curls. "Mom needs us to run to the grocery store really quickly."
"Alright," Nick said as he picked up his guitar and set it on its stand. "Just give me a minute."
"Okie doke," Joe said as he turned down the hallway to Frankie's room. He reached Frankie's door and knocked.
"Come in," a voice called from the other side of the door. Joe turned the knob and pushed the door open.
"Hey Frankster," he said as he walked over to Frankie. Frankie was lying on his bed staring at the glow-in-the-dark sticker stars on his ceiling. "You want to come with Nick and I to the grocery store?" Joe asked Frankie as he nudged his right foot with his hand. Frankie sighed.
"Sure," he said as he climbed off his bed and walked over to the door. As Frankie walked passed Joe, Joe reached over and playfully messed up his hair. Frankie reached up and combed his fingers through his hair and putting it back to how it had been. Joe walked ahead of Frankie and stopped at Nick's door.
"Dude, are you ready?" Joe called through Nick's closed door. The door opened and Nick emerged from his room.
"Yeah, let's go." Joe, Nick, and Frankie headed down the stairs and to the garage.
"Be back in a little bit." Joe called through the house as he closed the garage door behind him. Joe walked around to the driver's side and climbed in as Nick got in shotgun and Frankie climbed in back. Joe pushed the button to open the garage door, turned around, and pulled out into the crisp October night air.
