A parish priest who, in 1810, led a peasant revolt that ignited the Mexican War of Independence, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla is considered the Father of the Nation of Mexico. His Grito de Dolores, calling for an uprising against the Spanish Colonial Government, which has become an event of mythic status, emblematic of Mexican Independence, is annually reenacted on September 15th by the President of Mexico and other celebrants in cities and towns all over Mexico and in Mexican communities around the globe.
