New Device Means Peace In The 'Chair'

A new device which masks the high-pitched, fear-inducing (for many), whine of the dentist's drill could reduce massively the fear out of getting your teeth treated, say researchers.
Plugging into a mobile or MP3 Player the device uses a newly developed filtering technique to completely cancel out the high-pitched whirr of the drill -- but still lets patients listen to music and hear what the dentist is saying.
Many studies have highlighted the fact that, for many people who fear the dentist, it is the sound of the drill that causes the most anxiety. The dental team from Kings College, Brunel University and the London South Bank University are confident that the device will encourage more people to get the dental treatment they require and which rthey may have been avoiding because of that very common fear of dentists.
The device contains a microphone and a chip that analyses soundwaves, it plugs into the MP3 or mobile just below the headphones, and uses 'adaptive filtering' to mask only the unnerving sound of the medical equipment, such as the drill and suction pipes.
This revolutionary device, because it cancels out the noise of the dental drill, could spell the end of people's anxiety about trips to the dentist, according to experts.
Created by Professor Brian Millar at King's College Dental Institute, he drew inspiration from carmaker Lotus, which has developed a system to remove road noise while allowing drivers to hear things like car horns/emergency sirens.
