The reception of german pop radio station SWR3 via Digital Radio and classic FM radio compared. Both broadcasts are transmitted from the same transmitter site - Stuttgart TV Tower (Stuttgarter Fernsehturm), also known as "Degerloch" or "Hoher Bopser", and received from about 45 kilometers in distance, but with some moderate elevation in between.

FM 92.2: ERP 100 Kilowatts
DAB+ 11B: ERP 3 Kilowatts

While it it planned to launch a repeater network for 11B from August 2011, by the date of this video record 11B was still only broadcast from Stuttgart TV Tower as a test run.

I regard the technical prospects of DAB quiet impressing.

  • What a load of shit. Unless you guys have got really bad radio in Deutschland (like the video would have us to believe), analogue radio quality is not this bad.

To me this looks like a bad viral marketing campaign. "Hey let's show how shitty old radios are compared to our new radios. Now give me some money!"

  • @Loafered sorry, but I have to object. I'm not part of any marketing campaign. I just made this observation and put it online.

For the record: This radio (a Sony) can receive SWR3 perfectly on FM from other transmitters of its repeater network.

  • @freiwildvideo another poster pointed out possible CCI, and it does sound like one. Well, perhaps there could be some local interference. I know in my home, even my CRT TV and desktop computer tend to seriously degrade the FM radio reception basically wiping out any distant stations. Just out of curiosity now that DAB+ is rolled out in Germany - how expensive the receivers are and if there are any mobile ones out there already, how long the batteries last?

  • Na, der Vergleich ist ja SEHR objektiv ^^
