We're at Maple 3 in Maleny. Meet George the residents Eastern Water Dragon and his friends.

The eastern water dragon grows to around 80-90cm in length. They usually have shades of grey or brown with a series of black bands on their back and tail and a black stripe on the side of their head behind their eyes. Their underside is creamy-white, although males may have a vivid red on some or most of the belly and chest. You can see Gorge's scales forming a crest down the middle of the head, back and tail. The legs are long and powerful and the strong tail is flattened on the sides, this helps with swimming.

Male water dragons will sometimes fight each other for territories. They stand on their back legs in an attempt to push the other over on to its back.

The eastern water dragon hangs out arond the coastal water courses of eastern Australia from northern Queensland to Gippsland in eastern Victoria. They are good tree climbers and like to laze on branches overhanging the water. If threatened they will drop into the water and swim to the bottom to wait for any danger to pass, staying under for up to 30 minutes.

They eat mainly small reptiles, worms, frogs, insects, vegetation, fruit, and today an open grill.

The young are miniature replicas of the adults and are able to fend for themselves as soon as they hatch.
