Santa Muerte (Saint Death), also known as La Santísima Muerte (Most Holy Death) and Doña Sebastiana (Lady Sebastienne), is a religious figure who receives petitions for love, luck, and protection. Saint Death is often depicted as a skeleton dressed in a white tunic or wedding gown.
The Catholic Church has denounced the worship of Santa Muerte as a pagan tradition contrary to the Christian belief of Christ defeating death.
This Saint is frequently dressed as a grim reaper with a scythe and scales (the scales may be reminiscent of St. Michael). She may also be dressed in a long, white satin gown with a golden crown (Muerte, and its related Romance words, has a feminine gender). In this form, many devotees view her as a variation of the Virgin Mary.
Grim Reaper statues are made in red, white, green and black for love, luck, financial success and protection. Offerings to Santa Muerte include roses, marijuana, cigarettes, fruit, candy and tequila. Public shrines to Saint Death are adorned with red roses, cigars, fruit and bottles of tequila, and Santa Muerte candles burn in her honor. Throughout Mexico, and in parts of the United States (especially in Mexican immigrant communities), Santa Muerte prayer cards, polichinels, medals, and candles are made and sold to the public.
Santa Muerte's roots may lie in the beliefs of the Aztecs, who worshiped a god of death by the name of Mictlantecuhtli, along with his wife, Mictecacihuatl.
Similar to other cultures around the world, pre-Christian deities in Mexico are sometimes syncretized as pseudo-saints. On the other hand, in Spanish she is typically referred to as "la Santa Muerte," strictly speaking meaning "the holy death" rather than "Saint Death," which would correspond to "Santa Muerte," with no preceding article. Thus Santa Muerte may simply represent a reinterpretation by folk religion of the traditional and orthodox Roman Catholic practice of prayer to receive a blessed death in a state of grace.
Her prayers, orations, and novenas contain the Trinity and worship of the God of Abraham. While some view Santa Muerte as a figure of black magic, others view her as a saint. Santa Muerte is revered by the Iglesia Católica Tradicionalista mexicana-estadounidense (Spanish for "Traditionalist Mexican-American Catholic Church"), a church unaffiliated with the Roman Catholic church.

  • LOL...that daft old Catholic priest contradicted himself. First he says they have found God. Then he rants on about the devil.

In actual fact the red white and black corresponds to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in the Hindu religion. Also Ahura Mazda, Zervan and Ahriman. Joyful, Peaceful and wrathful Buddhas. All the same.

  • I believe in her nd those comments dnt mean nada to me!!

  • @tellingTruths99 True, but I would assert it's (wo)man made. She very much began as the patron of women who felt they could not go to traditional saints with their problems.

  • @sammyhain13

la santa muerte is a man made religion...

  • @tellingTruths99 La Santa Muerte is nothing like the grim reaper because she does not take the souls of the dead. The religion is from the Aztec and if you're saying it's devilish then that's like saying Mexican culture is a sin because La Santa Muerte is connected to the ancestors of Mexico due to the Aztec religion.

  • @tellingTruths99 no it's not the devil's work. There is nothing in the bible saying La Santa Muerte is bad. My boyfriend is a believer and he has told me about her and I've looked her up myself. No offense, but your religion even finds other music besides gospel a sin. La Santa Muerte is nota God she is a protector.

  • @Hottie200171

i am christian and i disagree, and i`ve done my homework, this is no holy power or protection... it is protection under Satan... once you have prayed to "la santa muerte" YOU are HIS, this kind of prayer is selfish, it does not seek to help others but yourself, this is Satan's way of getting you: He gives you what you want... and then you are no longer you fathers son...

  • @Yezidism07 wow you truly have no clue what your talking about! lol! macumba, santeria, lucumi, condomble all come from the IFA religion of the yoruba however there are fon congo influences as well in the genral practice of these "psuedo" ifa beliefs, but also in palo moyombe! now santa muerte comes from the aztec's of whats now mexico! they worshiped a goddess named Mictlantecuhtli who is santa muerte today! same efiggy etc. and templars were more christ like than priests lol! you need to read!

  • I'm a catholic and I see nothing wrong with La Santa Muerte. People who disagree mostly discriminate followers as prostitutes or drug dealers. Don't judge the religion if you don't even know about it.
