Flag Burning OWS: Occupy Oakland Patriots, Anarchists, and the Underpaid have a discussion

This is down at the ports on the November 2 strike in Oakland. This occured at one of the Oakland port entrances. A group of anarchists burned a flag (smelled like burning plastic, wish they'd chosen a flag with more "green" materials personally!), and this extremely animated discussion ensued.

I wasn't going to comment on my own video, but here goes!

First of all, flag burning is, accordion to Supreme Court rulings based on the First Amendment, protected speech in most circumstances. Not only IS it protected speech, it SHOULD be. Remember the first amendment protects speech which you DON'T agree with. This is a fundamental principle of our democracy.

The man's vocal disagreement with the flag burning is also protected.

The flag they were burning was not the American flag, but one often confused with it: an American flag with 3-gold fringes on it represents Maritime Law. There's a powerful difference between an American flag with yellow fringes and one without. One is Constitutional, the other is not. A simple decoration is enough to change the whole entire meaning of it without being realized by the vast majority of people.
