Recorded June 13-17, 2000. Fairbanks is the largest city in the Interior region of Alaska, and second largest in the state behind Anchorage. According to 2007 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 34,540. The video begins in downtown Fairbanks on the Bridge of Flags over the Chena River. I then spend some time at Golden Heart Plaza, the focal point of which is Malcom Alexander's statue "Unknown First Family" which is "dedicated to all Families past, present and future, and to the indomitable spirit of the people of Alaska's Interior. Next I drive north of the city and view the Alaska Pipeline and Gold Dredge No. 8. The video concludes with a short tour of Alaskaland.

  • aaaahhh! I love Fairbanks! I've been here all my 16 years of life. But, man! This is a really long time ago - sort of - cause AlaskaLand is now Pioneer Park...the tourists were getting confused thinking "alaskaland=disneyland" so the name got changed. grrr... my friends and I still call is AlaskaLand though. The only downside of Fairbanks is the -60 weather from Dec-Feb. And, it DOES get dark completely...just not in the summer time. Especially June and July. And, yes - people do ski the Chena..

  • I've lived just outside Anchorage for the past 4 years and last summer I was in Fairbanks en route to Galena working for Alaska Fire Service. Hate to say, but as much as I love Alaska, Fairbanks is the armpit, as is much of "the interior". Scenery is minimal with only rolling hills, overall very ratty city except for the North Pole area that's pretty nice, and winters that make Siberia a paradise in comparison. Summers are nice and warm, but air conditioning is just as contraband there as the r

  • God help them..... Looks like shit.... I still don't understand why somebody wants to live there.. Well, makes sense, if you are from Ohio, Iowa, Arkansas, or something like that, same shit.. I live in NYC and not even for leisure would go in my entire life...

  • I love to float from Alaskaland to Pike's and wave at all the boaters and stuff. Pleasant.
