Here is a film of one of Exeters finest Groups recorded on 8mm film in 1964 and 1965 by their Manager. A reel of film only lasted a three minutes and was very expensive at the time. This was made over 20 years before MTV and the creation of music videos so they were quite ambitious for the time. The Spartans film was shot on the beach at Orcombe Point in Exmouth but it started to rain so we all went off to Woodbury Common, the boys mimed as there was no electricity of course and Drummer Tommy Searle had the worst job of carrying his drum kit to two differant locations. The boys then went to a regular gig - The Queens Hall in Barnstaple and colour film was now on sale! You can see how Carnaby Street in the sixties had an influence on their own outfits. Check out three other films too: The Hi-Jackers, The Four Steps Beyond and The Four Steps Beyond........enjoy! Brian Roberts (Group Manager) ex Starline Entertainments Agency
is the slim handsome lead singer Roger Collet. What a great tambourine man and just as handy with a trowel. Shame the original sound is missing. No doubt later bands (the beatles/stones) followed the spartans dress code. Groovy

These guys had the most extreme trousers of all the Westcountry bands of the time - and they were a cracking good band. Takes me right back! Thanks to Brian Roberts for putting this on youtube best stage presence. i think they specialised in Who covers
