so if I am running on windows 7 and I have a dual monitor setup, could i have the virtual machine running linux on one monitor and and have my windows 7 in another? also when using the virtual machine does this give me the full OS or is just a way to try it out?

@wesman6960 yes u can run Ubuntu on one side of ur screen. On virtualbox it installs the full OS on the virtualbox harddrive so it doesn't affect your computercomputer
