Watch a 15-minute video of the press conference held at the medical center on April 2, 2009, to announce a new, portable artificial lung developed by UMMC doctors. Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center have adapted a small, portable artificial lung, using a newly approved catheter. This device enabled Ward Forsyth, a 49-year-old Maryland man who was suffering from end-stage emphyesema, to stay alive while awaiting a lung transplant. The conference features several of Forsthyth's doctors, including Dr. Bartley Griffith, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center and Dr. Aldo Iacono, medical director of UMMC's Lung Transplant Program.
