There is no doubt that SLS (or any project like it) will get shelved. Lets just hope it doesn't happen when we have a half-built lunar base, because by then too much time and money will have been spent on nothing.
NASA wanted to get to Mars by the 1980s during the early 1970s, but the cost exceeded 400 billion and the project was shelved.
Nothing has really changed in many regards--it is still as expensive to put stuff in space with SLS if not more, it is essentially being sold to the same public as the 1970s, and the economy isn't all that much better (some argue it is worse).
NASA needs to reduce the price per pound to get to orbit (and beyond) to make the dream of colonizing space a reality.
NASA isn't going anywhere. It may as well be possibly be preparing to dismantle the astronaut corps somewhere within the next 15 years. SLS inherits the same problems that canceled Apollo--Its high operational cost.
Most experts agree that NASA will be broke by the time SLS is developed. This is just a strategy for a few Congresspeople to get elections from people who lost their jobs due to the shuttles' retirement.
i believe the first visit to mars would have to be a colonization attempt, it wouldnt be economical or viable to make a trip back from mars, because we must bare in mind feul and the cost of transporting said feul to a mars mission, NASA really needs to disclose more infomation on this matter, because i beleive it would be a rediculous endevour traveling to Mars, with an infinite supply of food, water and feul, there is no real chance of a prolonged stay on Mars because of this.

Nasa's been promising to get us to Mars for decades now. I see this as nothing more than another empty promise.

Being able to get to Mars hasn't been the problem. The almost 2-year round trip is the problem.

@Postie218 well nothing's stopping you from living your life in a cocoon controlled by the government, where you see and hear lies 24/7.
