On March 24, 2009, Operation Patient Access held a panel discussion on Capitol Hill to focus on critical surgical access issues. Dr. John E. Mayer discussed how specialties such as cardiothoracic surgery have not had enough training applicants to ensure access to surgical care in the future. With an aging Medicare population where heart and lung disease are prevalent, the cardiothoracic surgery workforce faces increased demand and decreased supply. Dr. Mayer is professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School, and senior associate in cardiac surgery at the Children's Hospital in Boston.
