"Why Celebrate the Holidays?" (freethoughtvlog #56)

Christmas, New Years Eve - and other 'special days' are purely artificial. Man created those days. What is the sense of celebrating them? Why should we celebrate them at all? In this (english spoken) freethoughtvlog Boris van der Ham is inspired by the 'Human Condition' of Hannah Ahrend.

Since 2010 Dutch MP Van der Ham has a weekly 'freethinking video blog' (vrijzinnige lezing) in Dutch on YouTube. Some of this video-blogs are made in english.

Kerst en Nieuwjaar- en andere zogenaamde 'speciale feestdagen' zijn door zelf mensen bedacht. Waarom vieren we dat soort kunstmatige dagen eigenlijk? Wat voor zin heeft het? In deze (engelstalige) vrije lezing aandacht voor Hannah Ahrend's ideeen over het nut van verdragen en wetten. Boris van der Ham probeert daaruit ook het nut van feestdagen te verklaren.

Sinds 1 januari 2010 publiceert D66-Kamerlid Boris van der Ham vrijwel wekelijks 'vrijzinnige lezingen' op o.a. vrijzinnig.com, www.joop.nl, www.liberalemedia.nl, www.plein66.nl, www.nujij.nl, youtube en enkele engelstalige sites. Met de videoblogs wil hij de geschiedenis schetsen van het vrije denken. Wat zeggen oude teksten over de vraagstukken over onze tijd, en kunnen ze verdieping geven aan onze vrije samenleving?

Van der Ham: "De lezingen zijn bedoeld om te prikkelen, om mensen een interessante gedachte uit het heden en verleden mee te geven aangaande vrijheid en het vrije denken. Het zijn persoonlijke statements die ik illustreer met een schrijver of tekst die ik inspirerend vind. Het is een persoonlijk, en niet partij-politiek initiatief. Alle teksten en kosten zijn van- en voor mijn eigen rekening."

I find it amazing that almost all cultures, old and new, have had a form of "Christmas".

@TheJam1192 Yes, but its not very strange. It has to do with the time of year. During this period in december the sun is turning back, so in all cultures the 'feast of the returning light' is celebrated. The Romans called it 'Saturnalia', the Germatic cultures "Midwinterfeast'. The Solstice now is celebrated with Xmas. ;-)

@Borisvdham Yes, I watched your vlog last year on should atheist celebrate Christmas. :) It is interesting thought that cultures who are in climates that have almost always warm weather even have/had a special December holiday, such as the Inca in South America and in Hindu cultures.

@RajTamil Well, first, its not my book but that of Hannah Ahrendt. En second, the point is that its so very good to celebrate a holiday like Xmas, and others, because we need a reason to have fun.
