  • I was diagnosed just 4 months ago, and I was grateful to accept that I was a diabetic. I was so sick before I went in the hospital that I just wanted to know what was wrong! In my opinion, you have two choices with diabetes: you can try to ignore it and be miserable, or you can accept it and live your life to the fullest. And if I, a 17 year old senior in high school, can keep my BG roughly between 80-110 on injections, I feel anyone can! Also, i'm looking forward to getting my pump soon!

  • @jbs24601 what a great attitude and insight. I couldn't agree with you more! Thanks for posting this.

  • hey Bill!

i was diagnosed with Type 1 about 3 1/2 years ago (late onset), and even though i wasn't aware of it, i had never accepted that i was diabetic, i've been fighting the fact for that long. About 2 weeks ago something finally clicked, in my mind i no longer had diabetes; I was diabetic, I think that small distinction makes the world of difference.

the difference in numbers? prior to this my average BGL was 14.4(260) two weeks later 8.2 (147) and still improving :-)

    this vid sums it up!

  • Thanks for the comment. Diabetes is tough and mine hasn't gone away in over 21 years. Like you, I needed to finally accept this, and move in the right direction

  • I went on line looking for more info on diabetes...something to help me decide what to do. I came across this video and I was so amazed to how well I could relate to all you were saying. You see I had just pulled out the box my insulin pump was in. I have felt so bad for failing last year on the pump that I wasn't sure I should even try again. After listening to you I realized I'm not alone. I thank you for your truthfulness. I am ready to accept my diabetes and the fact that I can do better.

  • I accept all of these things - but only because I have to, because I don't have a choice. I manage everything - but again, just because I have to.

  • @1HappyDiabetic I know what U mean, but for us what is moving in the right direction? The frustration I have is when I see a person that doesn't care about themselves, cough on their hand and use a door knob I will need to use...And what do you do at your snack 1) just enter the last blood sugar the meter was reading 2) check your blood sugar with a finger stick and open a portal for the bacteria on that door knob. And that's just in everyday stuff, what about waiting rooms at the doctor office?

  • Hi, Bill. I just turned 42 and have reached my silver anniversary with Type 1. I enjoy having stunned people comment that I look very healthy. I'm happy that despite my lousy control the first few years I don't have any of the famous "complications". On the other hand I'm at the point where fluctuations are inevitable, and this seems to undermine my efforts to keep the numbers good. My A1C will NOT drop from the 7 range. I soldier on like you. Good luck.

  • Im 21 I was just diagnosed with diabetes 2 months and a half ago.. I was really sick before I went to the hospital. I just thought that I had a Flu Virus. Finally I went to the emergency room.. There they told my parent I had diabetes and that if I had taken a few hours more I could have gone it coma cause my blood sugar was too high... the first thing I thought when they told me was okay I have it now what can I do to help myself..I accepted 100%. not easy but not impossible..
