The poetry of Du bist expresses many passionate emotions in phrases such as, "You are the longing and what stills it" and "my eyes are illumined by your radiance alone". Most interpretations view the song as an expression of romantic love and devotion, but there are others that view it as an expression of spiritual love. It's a perfect example of Schubert's style of lied writing with strophic structure and elegant word painting.
