That was the first Golden Age. Originally, there were two broad manufacturing lines: commercial grade robots and military robots. The commercial bots evolved into the Autobots. The military evolved into the Decepticons. Those both evolved into the Transformers when they began to war against each other.

The only explanation I can see is that in G1, the Cybertronians met the Quintissons, a 5-sided alien squid-like species and it turned out that *they* were the Cybertronians'' creators. Cybertron itself was a factory world where the robots were built, so it was probably organic in the distant past. As technology increased, the robots became sentient enough to design and build themselves; then they kicked the Quintessons off their factory world and declared independence.
Pretty cool that Cybertron wants to make its self (Semi) organic again. Sound to me like the enviromentalists got a big word in this series.

@wlspook Well, sometimes in G1 they were on Cybertron. But still,it's just a really strange consept... i'm in denial! I actualy like Beast Machines, but a grassy Cybertron, doesn't seem like Cybertron at all. :{
