"I'm certain that Osama is dead," Mr. North said, his certitude on this subject — and so many others — just about palpable. "I'm convinced of it, absolutely. And so are all the other guys I stay in touch with." Oliver North Aug 27, 2002 NYTimes

Osama bin Laden died after being maimed in an American air raid on the Tora Bora mountains of Afghanistan in December 2001, a French expert on the Arab world believes.
Ghislaine Alleaume, a historian and Arabist at the French national research centre, the CNRS, reached her conclusion after studying television and internet messages circulated by Bin Laden's supporters. She bases her theory mostly on a video of the al- Qa'ida leader broadcast by al-Jazeera television on 27 December 2001. Bin Laden looks weary and sick but Mme Alleaume also believes he has had his left arm amputated. "He is wearing a military camouflage jacket and you can see that someone has placed a bag in the same colours just behind him to disguise the fact that he has lost his arm," she said. She believes he died of his injuries soon afterwards. "Given the sanitary conditions, it would not have been easy to survive an amputation," she said.
Mme Alleaume has studied other messages circulated by Bin Laden supporters and she believes they contain clues that he is dead. Since the end of 2001, the texts have often been signed Osama bin Mohammed bin Laden, rather than just Osama bin Laden, she said. "Adding Mohammed, his father's name, gives him an apocalyptic dimension. The Koran says the Mahdi, the final messenger, will be recognisable, among other things, by the fact that he carries the name of the Prophet."
Last month an Arabic language audio-recording said to be of Bin Laden was circulated in which he urged Muslims to launch suicide attacks against countries that supported the war on Iraq. The tape was obtained from an Algerian national who said he had crossed the border from Afghanistan, where the tape was apparently recorded.

US commanders believe Osama is dead
The News International
09/04/2002
WASHINGTON: Commanders in the American military's most elite Special Operations unit are contending that their troops should be freed from the fruitless hunt in Afghanistan for Osama Bin Laden, military and intelligence officials say. Some senior officers in the Joint Special Operations Command have concluded that Bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, was probably killed in the American bombing raid at Tora Bora cave complex last December, officials said.
Yet the Special Operations leaders lack hard forensic evidence that would prove Bin Laden is dead, and acknowledge their conclusions are deductive, drawn partly from the lack of recent confirmed sightings or radio intercepts indicating he is still alive, officials say. Other military and intelligence officials have sharply disagreed with their assessment, and the analysis by some commanders of the Joint Special Operations Command does not represent a consensus of all Special Operations forces leaders, military officials said.
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld is pushing for an expanded use of Special Operations forces units beyond Afghanistan to kill or capture terrorists. As a result, Special Operations leaders are trying to determine whether the hunt for the elusive Qaeda leader is still the best use of the limited resources of the most elite units.
At least publicly, President Bush and Rumsfeld have said they do not know whether Bin Laden is alive or dead. Gen. Tommy R. Franks, commander of the American military effort in Afghanistan, said last week that he had not seen "convincing proof" that Mr. Bin Laden had been killed. But General Franks added that he did not know Bin Laden's fate. American intelligence agencies have received reports from people on the ground in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region claiming to have information that Mr. Bin Laden is alive.
Still, the assessment suggesting he is dead comes from the commanders of the elite military units responsible for counterterrorism
