billydumont, doesn't know what he's talking about I agree with you that was an epic year that I think was only dublicated two times in 1974 and 1989.

The 1939 years of gold for excellence in Hollywood. From that began the decade of the most successful American film.

For fans of vintage film, just the mention of 1939 is a Pavlovian rite of passage, making mouths water and eyes glaze over in a cinematic-style swoon.
Hollywood Hit Its Stride as 1930s Ended
1939 often is regarded as the single greatest year in American film history. Indeed, it would be difficult to identify another 12-month period in which more classic films were produced within the Hollywood studio system.

After watching the 1939 documentary in TCM I realized that it was a momumental year. I know about Wizard of Oz, Stagecoach, and Gone With The Wind but there were other films that were railroaded by those films like Only Angels Have Wings, Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Roaring Twenties, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, and Gunga Din and they fantastic as well. 1939 overall was a fascinating year in film and how they can be a factory and yet still produce masterpieces unlike today! Great video.

Ok, Just because Gone with the wind, Stagecoach, and Wizard of oz happened to fall on 39 doesnt mean its the best year - All the rest of the movies mentioned were stinkers! 3 good movies came out of that year, I'll give them that. But whats up with all these movies we never heard of? Is this a joke? You'd think if it was such a great movie people might of accually heard of it - I bet 1985 or 1991 was better

I don't know what you were thinking! 1939 was a great year for Hollywood! The studio system was at it's height of power, the celebrites were at the peak of their craft, and the films released in that 12 month period were 2,012! More than any other year before or since! 1939 was the height of the Golden Age!
