wow videosmithlaguna you have no idea what you are talking about, both programs do the same thing, the method is different, but the end result is the same, both tools. I also don't know where you are getting this free FCP from?!?! I bet you are a big hollywood type lol, I use an HP Media Composer system every day at work and I have crashes daily, as long as there are computers there will be crashes, you are insane.

I'm a film student / editing freelancer and from my experience, in this day and age, there is no room for bias. know everything and not only will you be more marketable but you will find that the differences between the programs that count are minuscule at most. Know Avid, know FCP, know Vegas, know premiere. I love em all because they help bring my and my clients visions to life. See ya all as I pass the unemployment office!

No it isn't a childs toy, it's a professional editing system. Avid is good, FCP is good, they're just tools, both capable of doing the job, they just do the job differently. Plenty of Hollywood movies are cut on FCP with no issues whatsoever. Let me tell you something; snobbery wo'nt win you friends or clients, it just makes you look like a dick.

OK fine. So I'm still a Hollywood outsider and you're in, good for you. But think about what Walter Murch said (paraphrased), "I was able to buy 4 FCP stations instead of renting 1 Avid system... why not cook on four stoves instead of one?". That's my 2 cents. Cheers everyone.

Ah yes. A bit of nostalgia. I first saw the Avid in 1989 and was blown away. I didn't work on an Avid until 1993 yet it was still in it's infancy. Fun to see where we've been and how far we've come in such a short time.

true to a point. avid is still king, but fcp is making inroads, even in hollywood.

and fcp ain't free by any means, (perhaps you're confused with imovie) and it's a good system for those on a budget especially if they're planning on doing primarily short form projects.

Oh, and in my experience the 'industrial' hp systems crash about as frequently as powermacs/mac pros, and when they do it's usually the avid "access violation/bus error" that causes it
