It's actually better to parry their elbows, but you have to be shifting. It controls their arm better. If you parry their wrist, they can instantly follow rotate the arm to through with an elbow if their punch doesn't land.

Opening guard lets you shrimp out. You can transition from being on the bottom to being on the side. And from the side, you can get his back.

It just clamps it in tighter and also opens up more options

Why do you open up the guard once you have the choke postion established? I have tapped out in the closed guard for this choke. It seems to me that you can pass the guard when it is open and go into side control thus negating the effectiveness of this choke. Any comments for clarification would be helpful, thanks
