@ThomasRowsell The whole focus of the book is to show that inequality is bad for everyone and affects both the rich and the poor. You could maybe consider reading the book and then you would see that it has nothing to do with communism or propaganda.

if every one who was suspicious of the motivations of the authors bought the book, then you would make a lot of money. nothing in the book can disprove one fact that is true. people are not equal. there is no god to say we should treat eachother as equals, and as hierarchical beasts we strive to rise above others.

@ThomasRowsell if you are suspicious of their motivations it comes from a lack of knowledge about their intentions and their research. Wouldn't it be better to be coming from an informed position? If you read it you would see it is not suggesting we can ever reach total equality but if we were able to reduce the gap it would significantly reduce most of society's problems...wouldn't that be something worth striving for, regardless of your desire or need to rise above others?

The problem with the spirit level is that they imply there is a causation, but they only prove a correlation (after disregarding certain countries).

This paper: Lynch J, Smith GD, Hillemeier M, Shaw M, Raghunathan T, Kaplan G. Income inequality, the psychosocial environment, and health: comparisons of wealthy nations. The Lancet 2001;358(9277):194-200.

Shows that there is no independent relationship between income inequality and health.This countered Wilkinsons 1992 paper in the British Medical Journal, where he first put forward this idea. It has been shown that Wilkinsons results were the artefact of the selction of countires.

Not sure this will sell the idea to people who don't already believe it. The 'Yes to AV' campaign failed so miserably because of that oversight. Not sure what would though...

@TheWreford I agree. Britain is a mixed economy and having the NHS doesn't make it a socialist nation. In fact it is an NHS in name only as waiting lists are so long people often end up going private for operations, getting private dental treatment or seeing a private physiotherapist, osteopath or chiropractor when they have chronic back pain. It's not like it was in the 1960's and 1970's where anybody who bought drugs over the counter in pharmacists was laughed at.
