The Fishing Cooperative of Isla Natividad is one of the oldest in the Mexican Pacific and one of the best organized in Mexico. As part of their exemplary fisheries management they have adapted the RCCA protocol to monitor two marine reserves that have been in place since 2006. Every year some of their best buzos (fisher-divers) survey inside and outside the reserves and collect data to assess the reserve effect. They spend over $100,000 USD annually to patrol the island perimeter and discourage poaching. This investment, along with an innate conservation ethic, has contributed to one of the most well-preserved kelp forest ecosystems in the California Current.
