Whether it's managing your online reputation, increasing your professional network, or utilizing Facebook and other social media sites to help grow your business, social media is quickly becoming a mainstay of the professional world.

Learn about utilizing social media with guest speaker Dr. Karen Lollar, Chair of Communication Arts and Sciences, and panel members: Dale Mingilton, President/CEO of the Better Business Bureau; Marlene Gresh, V.P. of Human Resources and Community Relations at United Western Bank; and Elizabeth "Lizzy" Scully, Social Engagement Manager of Metropolitan State College of Denver's Office of Alumni Relations.

  • With all due respect, the suggestions for using Facebook for a job search may prove dangerous to your career. Granted it gives access to a broader network of people through whom you may learn about jobs; however, it also opens you up to potentially undesired scrutiny by potential employers.

For example, let's say an interview goes badly and you begin to comment about it on FB. What if the interviewer turns out to be an unknown "friend?" What happens to your prospects? I think you see the issue.

  • @bobjfs I think other people have relevant points of view on this subject that shouldn't be ignored, especially if their techniques have proven successful.

  • As a social scientist (political science, sociology, and media studies), I tend to respect properly gathered and correlated data. I've done a great deal of study into the use of social media over the last year, including its use in finding work. What I read suggests choppy seas if one uses FB to look for work. I respect scientific studies, so I would love to see any data, quantitative or qualitative, validating this thesis.
