Ants animated with my autoWalk python script in Maya. If you give them a motion path or just keyframe the position, they'll walk there by themselves. The script work by using IK-rigged legs which moves to points derived by extrapolating their optimal position relative to the body. The up and down movement of the body is done with a simple sine curve with a random seed for each of the ants.

I'm creating this script as a part of my specialist project at Bournemouth University. I'm also working on a crowd simulation script, and in the end I am going to merge these scripts to have a functional crowd simulation script with automatically animated body movements.

The unrigged ant model is made by formica rufa, and can be downloaded for free from http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3d-model-formica-rufa-ant/388875

Sorry for the bad quality!

  • Thank you for sharing. Is the script to animate ants (without crowd simulation) difficult?
