So why don't the police have automatic weapons? The American general public seem to have easy access to them.

@AustraliaYouBeauty In the USA , a few years back it was very easy to get a weapon. This could range from a pistol to an automatic weapon. Now there are many legal documents involved before getting a gun. Such as criminal background checks and more which makes it harder to gain access to a firearm. The police in LA have easy access to M16's and also small explosives such as door breaching devices etc.

The USA has a big problem with stolen weapons and illegal ones. Which is the main killer.

@johnnypk1963 guns are great but there are better ways to kill people, ied for example are particularly effective, or a missile. anybody can pull a trigger, it takes true genius to build a missile and a guidance system for it.
