@ryujikan How was your trip? I am surprised that they let you onto the island!! ;-) I just found this post while watching Frank-san's version. You must be more acquainted with the Seito version as seen here:

@shingitai03 Just noted your response. There are some major differences between Bud-san's version above and Higa Sensei's Kyudokan version. Some minor differences in stances, the kick in the Kyudokan version is a crescent kick and not a mae geri as shown above. See: youtu(DOT)be/79RVgtgOSu0 or youtu(OT)be/5Lb38Wq1bkE
But Bud's version is excellent too!

Nice work my friend.

@shingitai03 Not exactly the same, there are a few technical difference like the foot that turns to the first move to the rear. But still an excellent version. I would suggest that you search Kyudokan Passai or Patsai Dai. There are several excellent versions for exemplars

@ryujikan In all cases of Shuri-te and Shorin-ryu based kata, this kata has been called Matsumura no Passai, Matsumura Passai, or Passai Dai. The Matsumura Seito Kata of the same name, (and no disrespect intended) is the only version that "does not" follow this pattern. Simply said it is not the version of Hohan Soken.......it is the version of every other credible resource on Okinawa that is representing Matsumura Sensei's teachings.

@shureikanshihan I am headed to Okinawa for my annual training on the 25th of July for 3 weeks. I would love to meet Seijan Kina and see his kata if possible. Do you have any contact information for him?
I have trained with 3 students of Soken Sensei and never learned a Passai kata that is similar to the one Bud performs above thus I am very curious to see other kata that are reportedly from the Matsumura Seito system that are so different than the ones I have been privileged to study thus far.

@ryujikan Soken Bushi Matsumura establisihed karate no gokuku-shorin-ryu; aka kobayshi-ryu(young pine forest) shuri-te. Nabe Matsumura passed it to Hohan Soken who started Matusumura Orthodox Seito-do, who's successor is Seijan Kina, not Fuse Kise. Sensei Kina's school is Shureikan (back to older ways). This is Passai Dai, there is also Passai Sho. Matsumura prefix is used a lot of times to distinguish an older version/like the 2nd Rohai prefixed "Soken" is not as old as Matusmura Rohai.

I can see where the art in martial arts come from watching your performance of this kata. Thanks for sharing.

Dear Sensei, Thank you so much for sharing this Kata. I've been studying this form for over a year now and your rendition is a great help to me.

Frank-san, Thanks. I agree that the kata is not the same as the Matsumura Orthodox system of karate, but as many other kata within the framework of Okinawan Karate as a whole, I would think that all versions of Matsumura Kata were in fact interpretations from/of the teachings of Matsumura. Matsumura much like you and I, must have been doing and sharing his karate for many years, and must have influenced many people. The same could be said of Chatan Yara and many others.
