Dave Burrell discusses his thought process behind his composition, Mama I'm Still Hungry. One of five new compositions in the Civilians During War Time concert.
World-renowned jazz pianist, and Rosenbach Musician-in-Residence Dave Burrell presents the next chapter in his Civil War sesquicentennial research project, Civilians during War Time. The six new compositions in this concert give voice to the thoughts and feelings of the mothers, brothers, civilian spies, and runaway slaves all living in the war but rarely seeing the battle field. The tone of these compositions reflects the anxieties and fears of a population living in an unforeseeable future. Mr. Burrell dug deep into the Rosenbach's archive to find inspiration for these bold new compositions.
Recorded on October 20th, 2011 at the Rosenbach Museum & Library.
