Hans van der Stelt, a carpenter in Amsterdam, devoted six years of his life to researching, writing and illustrating a book about trees. More specifically, trees in Amsterdam. Even more specifically, trees in two local parks -- the Hortus Botanicus and Artis Zoo. In this filmed segment for tv, he explains how he studied the trees in detail through the seasons and how he waited for just the right moment to make his detailed drawings. The resulting book, De Bomen in Artis en Hortus, first came out in 1989, and was soon out of print. In 2010 a new, expanded and updated edition will be published by Architectura & Natura, Amsterdam.
Hans is seen cycling through Wertheimplantsoen and Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, and demonstrates the use of his custom-built takkenpakker (branch cutter) to retrieve a branch of the Paulownia tree so he can draw it.
