Heres a lick I learnt by the drummer Stixx from Detroit. Its a 9 note phrase thats played over 16th note Triplets. I put my own little spin on it at the end.
Enjoy

  • I appreciate the way you break your video down; It makes it a lot easier to understand. However, I am a little confused. On the first roll, using just the snare and bass, you would count it like this?

    (snare) 1-te-tah, 2

    (bass) -te-tah

    (snare) 3-te

    (bass) -tah

am I counting this right? if so, how many times through do I count it. If I count it right then its only 3/4 of a measure. Thanx for your time

  • @mikeroxannandrew Hey. You need to think of it in 16th note triplets instead of 'normal' 8th note triplets. so instead of 1-te-tah 2-te-tah etc it would be 1-te-tah &-te-tah 2-te-tah &-te-tah (all the way up to four). 16th note triplets have 24 notes in a bar. That means if the phrase is 9 notes long you can fit 2 full repetitions followed by 6 notes to finish (in this case its RLRLFF). it sounds alot more complicated than it actually is!

  • could this be counted as a 9 stroke roll for just one bar??

  • a 9 stroke roll would be RR LL RR LL R

i.e. 2 sets of doubles followed by a single. This lick is a combination of singles and feet.

  • Awesome playing dude, great clear explanation of a great lick! Keep em' comin'!

  • thamks man...

  • nice bro, now all you need to do is play it in church

  • very nice!!!

  • One thing also that you can do is play the first time through on the snare and the second on the toms, or visa versa. Adds a little verity. :)

  • I love your patient and careful demeanor. Thanks for helping me improve my drumming.
