Unbelievable! To hear such a powerful singer sing this HIGH is impressive. At 5:39 is the amazing E-flat in altissimo. Outstanding, as is the final high D flat. I miss this singer. So rarely do we hear someone with such power.

@Kavafy Yes!!!!

@Klytemnest I might disagree. Pavarotti made a real mess of this. Why he felt he should have recorded it, with his emasculated sounding awful E-flat is quite beyond me. CM here sings the aria beautifully. The E flat is astounding, even if he cracks slightly on the last high note of the piece.

FORMIDABILE!

Is this available anywhere on CD?

where could I possibly find this incredible recital ?
-
I don't, but Renata might :-)
I recall hearing this cabaletta sung by Pavarotti. I wonder if it's available on CD. He sang the high E-flat in falsetto, the way he sang the high F on the Puritani recording, and then on the way down he crashed in chest voice. Frankly, singing those notes, even in falsetto, is no small feat for a man.

Great postings...but..is there any possibility to re upload this one with the audio and video coordinated? Thank you... very good videos. Merritt in great shape
Did Verdi actually write an E flat for his tenor? I mean, I wonder since by his time the technique had changed and the tessiture gone down by about a major fourth.

Yes indeed it's written. There's an alternate cabaletta for more "human" tenors called "Odio solo, odio atroce", which is great too and more "Pira-like".
