It is not a 'shame' it was taken from the French,
Anyone who knows the regimental history will know the honour of our regiment having this March, the ONLY march ever to be won in battle.
"C`mon, my lads, lets break the scoundrels at there own damn tune,Drummer - strike up Ca Ira!!"
What a sight it must have been to see the French fleeing from Battlefield, having their own revolutionary song played against them.
I was certainly proud to here it played when on parade, French origin or not

Shame that the National Anthem was also taken from the French.

Their quick march should be Wellington at least that was written by a German.

In memory of my great-grandfather who served with the West Yorkshires, 1914-1918. He survived the carnage that was the first day of the Somme, but carried the scars of the Great War until he died, almost fifty years later.

Ca Ira
@eoppen The March was taken from the French in battle. In 1796 one of the Yorkshire Regiment's antecedents were being driven back at the Battle of Famars, so the CO ordered his band to play the same march as the French bands so that they could be beaten 'To their own damn tune.' It worked!

Ironic, considering that this song is one of the iconic songs of the French Revolution. I can just see them, marching past Her Maj on review, this song playing...and Danton, Robespierre and all their trashy ilk spinning in their unmarked graves.
