I have no layer box, and my file drop down does not have a Dialogue option. Hours and hours wasted trying to do the most basic of thing....

I'd love to know how to use images in layers - specifically placing one one the other - like a cut-out of a person onto a background image. I have tried on and off for ages but get so frustrated I end up quitting for enough time to calm down.This was a good idea of layers in basic sense, but it didn't really show me the bit I needed.

I almost cried 3 minutes ago because ive been trying to click on a fucking layer and erase the bottom portion of it for 1 hour and 30 minutes but ive failed over and over and over and over and over and over a fucking gain. HELLPPPPPP!?!?!?!?! -
the gimp doesnt let me select other layers and i am getting so frustarated at this.

Right, I've copied and pasted a lineart picture from MS Paint and copied it onto GIMP. I make a new layer as the background, and try to colour it without going over the lines. But everytime I draw something, it won't show up. Any tips?

@modernwarfare331 You need to make sure you are trying to colour in the right layer. Select the layer you want to work on in the layers dock.

The layer dialog menu vanished and I have no "file" option on the tool thingy, its not overly userfreindly maybe thats the reason Ubuntu gave up Gimp?

@finnbjerke ctrl+L will bring it back. The upgrade from 2.4 to 2.6 moved the options from the tool dialog to the top of the image window...I personally find that more intuitive.
