Considering the many discussions about the new Alice in Chains release and their singer William DuVall, I thought I'd try a sort of side-by-side comparison. Not to see if Will sounds like Layne - no one ever will, and the band has repeatedly stated there is no replacement for Layne - just to recognize that Will holds his own (and quite well in my opinion) with the older AIC material.

I opted against adjusting the timing and pitch of one of the 2 versions to maintain vocal authenticity. Music fans are a passionate bunch, so I don't expect everyone to like Will's voice. I look forward to the various for and against comments about the new lineup, album as well as this song. For the record, I think the new album is irrefutably kick ass from start to finish. I hope you enjoy the video.

  • I love your idea for the video. And they do sound good side by side Cheers :)

  • @W78516 Thanks. There will always be the "Layne Only" people - but I bet they'll come around. I mean, it's fuckin' Alice! Glad you liked it. :)

  • These boys are way too good and must know what they are doing as the timing swings between 113 and 121 beats per minute but it does NOT sound good. Bust out the metronome boys and leave it at 120 beats per minute thank you. Maybe you all started in a garage but lets not try and re-visit it.

  • @midgetsforjesus1 "Maybe you all started in a garage but lets not try and re-visit it." lol Well put! Who knows...maybe they had to fill a shorter time slot than 120bpm allowed...or maybe they're just off the coke...or maybe they're just old! Ah, whatever, I still love the music these dudes make.

Thanks for checking out the vid.

Question about your user name... was there already a midgetsforjesus user, so you had to add a 1?

  • Whatever. I saw AIC with Duvall at Fuji Speedway and they rocked. I loved Layne too, but he's gone. The surviving three members have a right to play the songs they helped create, and Duvall's voice is great match with Cantrell's. As an AIC fan I'd rather hear these songs played with 75% of the original band and a competant singer like Duvall (who can manage to sing these songs well without imitating Staley) than not hear them at all. Haters just keep on hating, that's all you're good at anyway.

  • I am a huge AIC fan and have always loved everything they did. Duvall is doing great and the new album rocks! Layne was great, but he is gone now. I can't believe all the talentless jerk offs complaining that Duvall isn't as good as Layne. They're 2 totally different people and both deserve their place in AIC history. It's okay to have an opinion, but give Duvall a chance to grow into his new role and be glad that AIC isn't gone forever. Rest in peace Layne & Keep Rockin' AIC!!!

  • @WilhelmOfDessau As the guys said, they got together for a one-off show for the Tsunami several years back. Will had been in Cantrell's opening band on his Degradation Trip tour, who then became his backing band on the same tour! Will and Jerry would sing AIC songs with great harmonies. I was blown away! I believe he sang at the Tsunami show (among other singers) and it was, as the band put it, "an organic" process of Will joining. I don't think there was an intention to reform or not.

  • im sooo hiiiiiggggh

  • @imocomgt That's a bit of an extreme example...lol Just like a lot of people didn't like Van Hagar, not everyone is gonna like Will in AIC. And that's fine! The side by side comparison just confirmed your opinion, and us AIC fans all have 'em. Cheers.

  • @THEQUEEN12 I'm not sure if that's "I hate this" and "Dislike" in a variety of languages or something that needs translation...lol Anyway, not liking is cool. That you like AIC makes you OK in my book. :)
