Last Thursday, I went to a Ball State Symphony Orchestra concert, and got to hear my current favorite symphony (Dvorak 9) performed live.

I agree about talking about the music. I recently played "The Offering" at a marimba solo recital. I found myself wanting to inform the audience of why the piece was written so they could receive the music on a more personal level.
As for the question of the day. I can't remember the last concert in specific that had one big thing that made it special, but in a recent percussion ensemble we had at JMU we used a lot of lighting and stage projections which i thought added a nice touch.

Hi Tom - I agree with talking about the music before playing it. I love it when musicians do this on concerts and I do it for my concerts. Do you also mix in an introduction to the marimba or instruments or do you just keep it to the literature?
How is Serry's Night Rhapsody received? I find that piece very unaccessible when I heard Leigh Howard Stevens play it. This probably means I didn't "get it".

I mainly keep it to talking about the music. Serry's piece is generally well received. I usually discuss the "Dies Irae" theme quotes, and the many other connections to the Romantic Era. That seems to help a lot. Thanks so much for commenting!
