A colourful and noisy demonstration of local people including parents and children chanting "Save Our Schools" march through Wyndford, part of the G20 district of Glasgow, along Maryhill Road and back to a rally in front of Wyndford and St Gregory's primary schools which are being threatened with closure by the New Labour Council. Glasgow City Council plan to close 25 schools across Glasgow with many of them in Maryhill. Parents are naturally unhappy that their young children will have to travel dangerous and costly long distances to amalgamate with an unfamiliar new school and form part of larger classes which can be intimidating for a small child and in schools which in many cases have poorer buildings and worse facilities. Wyndford residents also fear that the closure of the primaries will have a knock-on effect on what few services are left e.g. the nursery, the local shop, and will lead to everything shutting down and people being isolated and the community ghetto-ized. Parents and other concerned people formed the Glasgow "SOS" Save Our Schools campaign and have been campaigning hard to prevent the closure of the schools. Chants from the marchers and speeches at the rally left people in no doubt: that Labour will collect their P45's in the next elections if they close the people's much needed schools.
