  • mr. hawkins would you email please because I want to learn from you I live in Rockville MD

  • Judo consist of mainly throws with some groundwork. Gracie jiu Jitsu is all Groundfighting. Akido is standing grappling techniques. These fighting systems and many others that derive from Japanese JiuJitsu have modified and improved upon JJJ techniques, each taking a segment of JJJ and mastering it.

  • Thanks for the info

  • It GREATLY depends on who you train with as Ju Jitsu has over 1000 different styles alone and Judo schools differ greatly on whether they teach groundwork extensively or not. Also some Ju Jitsus are very Aikido-like and have little to no ground work.

  • So if I learn judo and or ju-jitsu then I dont need to learn BJJ. Just learning judo or ju-jitsu will give me great grappling skills right?

  • Sort of. It's more of a "what came from what" thing. A timeline if you will. They both share a very similar set of moves with drastically different training structures and philosophies to govern their use. In Judo a throw can end the match so some Judo players don't focus on ground work that much, just great throwing to win. In BJJ a throw never ends a match, it must be finished on the ground so they tend to be better trained in their groundwork and less so in their throws than Judo players.

  • Okay so you're saying that judo and brazilian ju-jitsu are basically similar
