A demonstration of Eastern European Knitting, the purl stitch. Please note, this is not continental knitting, as here we enter through the back of the loop in both the knit and purl stitch. The resulting fabric appears exactly the same as both English and Continental knitting styles.

As a note to the purl stitch, notice that the yarn is still held at the back of the work.

  • Thanks much! I was looking for a continental purl where I don't have to move the yarn go back and forth. What a time saver.

  • Glad to hear you found the video useful. Just keep in mind that when you purl this way, the stitches face the other way (i.e., with the back loop leading) and therefore this purl stitch needs to be paired with the Eastern Knit Stitch in order to result in a standard fabric. Happy stitching!

  • I'm glad I found this videos! I always wondered why everybody else knitted differently. Now I know I was doing it the "eastern-european style", even though I learned it from a mexican lady.

  • For everyone who is asking, yes this changes the decreases in standard knitting patterns. You should know how to do a continental/english decreases as well. Start by thinking of them as left leaning or right leaning decreases. A standard pattern K2tog will be a right leaning decrease, and a SSK will be left leaning. I prefer charted lace patterns so there is less thinking about the abbreviations, instead you see / (k2tog, use a SSK the front loops) or \ (ssk, use a k2tog)

  • When following patterns with ssk or yarn overs etc. does this change the way you do those ie for lace knitting

  • @elsteffo

    Hello

can this purl be used in the same pattern with a continental knit stitch and look the same? I LOVE IT!

    ps

did you, would you, could you PLEASE translate the Finnish hedge hog mitten pattern into English???? :-)

  • I love this video. I just watched it over and over again, would pause it in some spots, then try whatever you were doing. I've tried other styles of knitting, but this is the only one that makes sense to me and it's faster than Continental or English style. Eastern is the only style I use now. Thank you! :-)

  • so glad i found this.. i haven't knitted in years and forgot most of what i learned, so i came on youtube to spark my memory.. in all the purling videos I looked at before this, the method seemed foreign to me and didn't make any sense. this one is the one i remember! my german mother was the one who taught me how to knit, so it makes sense that the method i know is the europeon method.. thanks for the upload!

  • it is ALMOUST the same, but EASIER and QUICKER :)

  • Ohh y goodness this is so much easier. I was reteaching myself how to knit and knew my mo had taught me continential style so learned that last week and this week wanted to adventure into making ahooded baby afgahan so needed to learn the purl. YIKES!!! I was having trouble doing the continental purl and saw you video so have relearned the knitting and am working on the purling. I LOVE it but am curious as the differences I might need to make when following patterns. Thank you for your videos

  • Would love to see/hear how this method treats common stitches like YO, KTBL, KFB, cables etc..
