COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Becky Kingery e-mailed us saying her young grandsons can no longer visit her house. She says, "I no longer feel safe in my own yard when pit bull dogs can jump a 5 foot fence like a deer. "
She wrote WIS after she says her neighbor was fined when he took matters in his own hands to protect her dog. She says those charges should be dropped.
"It's painful. He was a member of our family. He never went anywhere without my husband and I've never seen him so low," says Kingery.
It's still hard for Becky Kingery to talk about Sailor. She says her golden retriever was attacked and killed on Valentine's Day.
"It's horrible," she told WIS News 10.
She says it happened while she and her husband were at work. She thinks her neighbor's two pit bulls got loose, jumped a five foot fence and attacked and killed Sailor.
"My dog was in his own fenced in yard. A five foot fenced in yard," she says.
"I do not, I would be willing to bet to God that my dogs did not do that," says neighbor Phyllis Harrison.
Harrison's grandson owns the pit bulls.
She admits Brandi and Zeus got loose that day, but says they are friendly dogs and would never attack.
"Somebody else did that," she says.
She too is dealing with the loss of a pet. According to an incident report one of their neighbors, a man named Jimmy Summerton, saw Sailor being attacked and grabbed his shotgun.
He fired a shot, killed Brandi and wounding Zeus.
But Harrison still maintains she doesn't know who or what killed Sailor.
According to a report from animal control, Harrison's grandson was charged with two counts of having a dangerous and vicious animal, which carries a fine of more than $4,000.
"That's my grandson's and I've had pit bulls, okay? But I wasn't mean to my dogs and they weren't mean to no one else and they stayed in pens," says Harrison.
Harrison's grandson isn't the only one facing charges and a fine. Richland County Animal Control also fined the man who shot the pit bulls.
Documents show James Summerton was charged with animal cruelty and fined nearly $1,100 for animal cruelty.
Zeus, the other pit bull that was wounded, is in the custody of Richland County Animal Control.
They say they're investigating whether or not it is a dangerous or cruel animal.
