It's been about 3 years now that I have been running them daily, night and day and they are still going strong.
The fellow who made these for me buys LEDs in strips, 6 across. he trims them in any configuration that suits him. Just checking the spacing on the individual LEDs, they are spaced about 3/8" on center from each other.
Also, the two lights flash at different cycle rates, one group faster than the other. They can't be ignored even during the mid day sun.

how long have you been running that many LEDs so close together? I figured since LED's life span shortens drastically when they heat up that they wouldn't last very long like that. I'm just curious because I've been wanting to play around with LEDs because of their amazing efficiency but wonder how I'd go about mounting mass quantities of them.

I had a similar problem with the disc brakes (front) on my bike for a long time until I figured out a way to but the front wheel on when the bike was still on the rack - easy to align properly. Once again - Cool Bike!

I run two LED lights off the back of my tandem.
Two 2 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 1" lights made up of 40 LEDs in each one with the wiring and lights set into clear epoxy.
You could drive tent pegs with one and not break it.
I run them night and day.
The brightest thing on the road.

I just love this project, I want one!
It sounds like a brake pad is dragging?
Very cool!
