@abret69 You must have had some really bad encounters with people who say they are Christians and either didn't live like it or who were not really Christians. I sincerely hope your bad encounters won't prohibit seeking after the God who created you and who has provided a way of salvation for you through Jesus.
@abret69 And Jesus is the one who said that (in not so many words) that religions are empty when He said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one gets to the Father except through me." (John 14:6) There is no reason to get in a huff with me; I'm simply following the words of Whom I have placed all my trust.
You seem to have a great contempt for Christianity. Christians certainly aren't perfect; but the One who they follow is. I sure hope you can see the difference.
@abret69 First of all, I don't have a "religion" - I have a relationship. That trumps religion every time. That is what the real purpose of Christian missions is all about, that is, getting people to have a relationship with God through Jesus.
Sure. Their religious traditions may be meaningful to them, but they don't get them any closer to God, therefore they are empty or fruitless or pointless or whatever.
I don't base that on my own superiority; I base it on what my Jewish boss told me.
I am sure they will give you a welcome that is worthy of your intentions. Missionaries are just like the Borg. You all destroy cultures and could ruin the world be leaving us with one mono culture where we can't solve any problems because everyone thinks the same and has the same ideas. And you all do coerce conversion by going into areas where the people are poor and lacking resources that were more than likely stolen from them by Christians.
@rboyne Why don't you just say my religion is better than your religion/spirituality? At least then progressive/educated people would respect your honesty. Maybe you don't know what ethnocentrism is? It is clear that anyone who has no problem with saying that someone else's religious traditions are empty, is nothing but an ethnocentrist/ biggot. So when you go to these countries with Brown/Black and Red people and try to make them believe in your White Jesus, don't forget to stop in Iran.
@abret69 Again, you simply don't understand the message of the Gospel. It isn't about culture. It isn't about superiority. It isn't about Christians "saving" anyone, especially from themselves. A Christian's job is to share God's word, not to coerce conversion. It is the Holy Spirit of God that saves. To say that someone's religious traditions are empty is not ethnocentric; it is a simple and honest statement of Truth. It isn't speaking from a cultural viewpoint, but from a spiritual one.
@rboyne I am aware of all of that. Religion is a part of peoples culture and to say that other peoples religious traditions are "empty", is ethnocentric. As with prejudices in America, I am sure that the White people who are doing this, feel a sense of superiority and that they must save these "savages" from themselves.
@abret69 I'm not sure you have any idea what the whole point of Christianity is. It isn't a "white man's" religion. Jesus was from the middle east. Ethnocentric? Hardly. It has nothing to do with American culture or culture in general.
The whole point of Christianity is that God loved mankind so much that he sent His Son, Jesus, to take the penalty of our sin. If you believe that, you get life and forgiveness. If you reject it, you get to answer for your own sins.

If their is a God he can't be siding with these people. "Empty religious traditions" what a bunch of ethnocentric, racist white supremacist bullshit.
