"-They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
-Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
-If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead."
(Luqas 16:29-31)

The fact that no one knew the particular day or hour he was supposed to return is beside the point. The fact remains that Jesus promised he'd be back while some of his followers were still alive (Mark 9:1).
(In any event, the reference to day/hour implies that he'd return in a relatively short span of time. After all, he didn't say that nobody knows the YEAR or CENTURY--and it's been over 19 centuries since he died!)

@ClumsyRoot and isnt there a verse saying"truly I say 2you mountains will come and go but my word will not go"?denoting very long periods of time Also generation=generation of man ,and 4had already passed(we r the 4th or 5th)

@ClumsyRoot when John wrote his vision he was convinced SEVERAL things will happen BEFORE 2nd coming.those things clearly reffer 2 the future and also require many years Antichrist-beast-prophets teachings/killings-birth o a baby-disasters-war...John was already very old ,he knew he wont see those happenning but it did not seem unnatural 2him.nor was he surprised/disturbed by Jesus not "keeping his promise"because he as everyone else understood very well that the day- hour NOONE KNOWS but God

LOL! Very clever. You'd make a good apologist. ;)
Sorry, but the entire New Testament is filled with statements to the same effect: Jesus' Second Coming was to take in the very near future. This air of imminence is obvious to anyone who reads the text with an honest mind. (In fact, many of Jesus' teachings--don't resist evil, take no thought for the morrow--are positively immoral UNLESS the world is ending soon.)

@ClumsyRoot Do you talk about this Matthew 16:28
The key is found in what immediately follows each of these verses. Jesus calls Peter, James, and John, takes them up to a high mountain and is transfigured before them while Moses and Elijah come down to discuss His coming death. Consider the things that point to this being the event Jesus referred to in Matthew 16:28.

Do you know why we have wakes before funerals? Because it wasn't uncommon for presumably dead people to "awaken" hours or even days after they'd been pronounced dead. A three-day waiting period for burial was a way to avoid burying someone alive.
This isn't evidence of a miracle; it shows that when it comes to determining when a person is dead, we still make mistakes.
God bless his family. I hope he'll never let go of god. GOD IS GOOD

Wow and yet still people refuse to believe! I had a college class mate who said the same thing 'God is for old people' how sad! The world needs to be shook up and awaken!
