I know what that numbering system they used for the shuttle program back in the day meant. For example: 51-D stood for: 5 meaning the year 1985. 1 meaning the launch was at Kennedy Space Center. 2 would have meant launches would've been from Vandenberg AFB. And D signifies the number of mission for that fiscal year. Vandenberg was supposed to be used for launches but their launch program was cancelled after the Challenger disaster.

The "red chains" you see at main engine start having nothing to do with starting the engines or the SRB (the SRBs have ignitors in there nose).
The things you see at :49 are called the Hydrogen Brunoff System. They are flares that fire just before SSME start so that hydrogen gas cant build up under the pad. The SSMEs run in a "fuel rich" setup so there is always some un-burned H2 coming out of the nozzles.

The red chains you see explode at the 0:49 mark. Those are the firing chains that activate the SRB's.

Yep. The brake assembly on one of the main landing gear locked up during the last few yards of the rollout and dragged the tire. The outboard tire blew out.

I Heard on landing on STS-51D that Discovery suffered extensive break damage and a blown tire.
