Farmall used the gasoline/diesel combination in lieu of using glow plugs to cold start the diesel engine. It was easier to start the tractor on gasoline than diesel and it also helped the engine warm up faster. And yes, if the engine is warmed up, it can start on diesel alone. John Deere and Caterpillar used a small gasoline engine hooked to the engine flywheel to do the same thing. It was called a "pony" motor

That's a beautiful beast! I was wondering if it can be cranked on just diesel if the engine is hot?

The British and Australian built versions of the Super MD used a glow-plug start rather than the "gasoline start' of the US built Super MD.
