Found at the end of a jungle trail located in Waianapanpa State Park, the fresh water cave is a cool respite from the tropical heat. Steeped in legend and lore, it is said to be the place of refuge where Queen Popualaea hid from her jealous husband, King Kaakea. Betrayed by her reflection in the glistening waters, the King found her and murdered her in his rage -- turning the waters red with her blood. Each spring red shrimp appear in the waters of the cave to remind the King of the wrong he had done.
This is one of my favorite places on Maui. When camping at Waianapanapa State Park, make sure you make the morning or evening visit to the cave after the mid-day crowds have left the area. It isn't often that you can find such a magical place -- floating in the cool water, with palms and jungle outside, listen for the whispers of the wronged Queen as the wind moves through the cave.
If you choose to jump into the water, be careful! There is a low ledge opposite the jumping area, and the water is only four to five feet deep.
You should try it the next time you're in Maui. Waianapanapa is a remote area, but there are rustic cabins ($90 per night) and tent camping spots. Not for everyone, but my family and I fell in love with it. The water in the cave is fresh water, and is much cooler than the air or the sea water... great for cooling off.
