The first HD offering of Tennessean Rail Videos! We stopped by Michigan City, IN, when on our way to Michigan for Train Festival 2009 from the Illinois Railway Museum's Diesel Days.
Credited as the last of the interurbans, the Chicago, South Shore, and South Bend runs a steady passenger business between Chicago, IL and South Bend, IN. Though they still run under the South Shore name, the passenger trains are operated by the North Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD). They also operate as a freight shortline in several of the communities along the line.
The South Shore, in Michigan City, does street running on 11th Street and actually has one station stop on 11th Street.
@bigzman34 Does anyone know what voltage this line uses?

@stevefromPA2 You'll probably find there are sleepers under the tarmac to spread the weight.

The train actually runs on what is called a cantenary (that area above the air). If part of the 100 mile grid goes out, the whole line is impacted.

@hummingbird19150 Amtrak has something similar as well on Coast Starlight. Near Emeryville.

Amtrak used to do this in Lafayette, IN, on 6th street. A Railroad Relocation project moved the tracks in the 1990's, but there are a couple of spots where the tracks are still visible. I remember coming out of the movie theater once and being greeted by a train in the street! : )

Once the train gets out of Michigan City and onto straight track, it's top speed is 79 mph.
