Simon Despres, a 6'4", 205 lb defenseman from the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL, was selected 30th overall, the final pick of the first round, by the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday, June 26, 2009.
I love what I'm seeing from him so far. He deserves to begin the season with the Pens. If they decide he needs more time at junior then they can send him back there with the experience of a few NHL games like Kris Letang a few years ago. As early as this season maybe as late as next a defense of Martin,Michalek, Orpik,Letang,Goligoski and Despres? Unbelievable. Of course a forward group of Crosby,Malkin,Staal,Kunitz,Comrie,Tangradi,Talbot,Cooke,Asham,Rupp, Adams and Dupuis? Great. Plus Fleury!
Just called up today, Welcome to the NHL Despres.
